Matthew 24

Matthew 24:2
You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.

Getting the news of Kobe Bryant’s passing last week was a shock. Here one day and gone the next. Seems surreal. But that’s the way of the world. Nothing in this life remains forever. Kingdoms will pass, dynasties will fall, cities will topple, statues will crumble, works of art will disintegrate, and books will fade. All modern-day realities will become yester-year artifacts. Even generations of people will be replaced by others. In the moment, they all seem to be unalterable. Yet, as the grass of the field, they too will pass out of time and mind. One stone will not be left upon another, Jesus says. Everything, as we know it now, comes to an end.

That’s why Paul reminds us, in 2 Corinthians 4:18, that what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. So, if your current situation is somehow propping you up, beware. It won’t (and it can’t) do so forever. And before it’s yanked out from underneath you, please get a firm foothold on the One who remains forever.
