2 Kings 10-11

Daily Devotional from 2 Kings 10--

Verses 28-29 (CSB)
Jehu eliminated Baal worship from Israel, but he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—worshiping the gold calves that were in Bethel and Dan.

Reading through 1 & 2 Kings is rough. The consistent downfall of each generation of kings (who led Israel into sin) is frustrating as a reader. We want to yell YOU HAVE THE LAW AND GOD ON YOUR SIDE! HOW CAN YOU WORSHIP OTHERS?!

Jehu is one of those kings. Commissioned by a prophet to do the work of the Lord---eliminating worship of a destructive god. Yet, Jehu continued to worship others. God even honors him for the work he did--but still, Jehu turns away and forgets the law of God.

As humans, we can easily fall into the same pattern. Like Jehu, we can do good things (all in the name of the Lord) yet still majorly fail in other ways that lead us into destruction. It’s the way of sin.

Jesus is the true king that Israel (and Judah) needed. And he’s the king that you and I need. Unlike Jehu, Jesus followed the instruction of the Lord and lived righteously. Through his death and resurrection, his righteousness is placed upon us when we accept the gift of his grace and mercy through faith. We no longer carry the guilt of failure--but carry the favor of the Lord through our king Jesus.
