Matthew 16
Matthew 16:22
Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.
Peter was feeling good. Thought he was on a roll. He was just commended for getting Jesus’s identity correct. He nailed it when no one was even close. And then this. He takes Jesus aside and tries to adjust his thinking. Oh, sure, it was borne out of good intentions, but how easy we can slip into a certain familiar pride. We get to feeling good about our decisions, got some victories under our belt, get to thinking our voice is necessary in certain situations, and then we overstep our place. We are well-intentioned, but sometimes ill-advised. So I believe this is a call to keep ourselves in check, keep our feet on the ground, and be willing to say less instead of more, especially when we feel like we’re on a roll.
