Romans 10

Romans 10:2
For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

Paul is talking about his Jewish brothers & sisters – they were ALL ABOUT following the Rules of Righteousness, trying to earn favor with God – but they didn’t understand that ultimately, God does not want our self-sacrifices. We don’t get to heaven just by following all the rules or being a ‘good person’. He wants our hearts, soft before Him, submitted to Him, desiring His will over our own. That’s the knowledge that the Jews were missing: that being right before God is a matter of faith, not works. Having zeal for God is awesome – but it must be tempered by the grace and love of Jesus. Jesus told the Pharisees, and he tells us today: “Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’” (Matthew 9:13) How can you show mercy in your world today?
