Leviticus 17-18

Daily Devotional from Leviticus 17--
Verse 11
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.
Atonement is one of those “church-y” words that gets said a lot. We know the context of it and that it is related to the cross and that it does something with sin.

In this verse, the Hebrew word for atonement means:
make amends; forgive; remove the guilt from a wrongdoing; ransom; pay money as a gift, with a quid-pro-quo of being allowed to keep one’s freedom; and to give a gift of tribute which will establish some level of relationship, possibly implying reconciliation.

The shedding of sacrificial blood purified the one offering it in the eyes of God. When Jesus died on the cross, his blood removed our guilt, atoned for our souls, pardoned us, paid our debt, and made reconciliation possible. When he rose from the dead, the power to keep us in debt was done away with and we are now allowed to keep our freedom! We are made clean and right forever. AMEN!
