Judges 11-12

Daily Devotional from Judges 11—

Verse 36 (HCSB)
“Then she said to him, “My father, you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me as you have said, for the LORD brought vengeance on your enemies, the Ammonites.”

The story of Jephthah is perplexing. After leading the Israelite army in victory after victory, he celebrates by making a foolish vow to God. Why is it not surprising that his only child is the first to greet him? The most interesting part is his daughter’s attitude about the situation. She accepts it and tells her father to keep his vow, mourns what her life could have been and goes to her death. It’s crazy!

Has there been a time where someone else’s sin has affected you deeply? Where you were the one who had to pay the price? I think we’ve all been there. What sets us apart as People of God is how we handle situations where we are sinned against.

Jesus has been there. And just like Jephthah’s daughter paid the price for his sin, Jesus willingly went to his death for ours, even mourning over his life--asking God to let the cup pass from him--but ultimately settling on “it’s not my will, but yours.”

What is God’s will asking of you today?
