Psalm 111

Daily Devotional from Psalm 111—

Verse 10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!

Wait, isn’t God supposed to be a “good, good Father”? Isn’t He “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…”? Why then should we fear Him?
One of the definitions of the Hebrew word for “fear” in this verse means “respect”. If we read it that way, ‘the respect of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom’ then, according to the Oxford English dictionary’s definitions of ‘respect’, we will find ourselves “feeling deep admiration” for God, and we will show “regard for [His] feelings and wishes”.

Ahhhh, THAT is how we step onto the path toward Wisdom – we feel deep admiration for His goodness, and what He’s done for us, and that admiration causes us to want to bless Him, to bring Him Joy, and do His will. As we live daily like that, we will grow in understanding and wisdom!
