Deuteronomy 26-27
Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 27—
Verses 1-3 (HCSB)
Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, “Keep every command I am giving you today. At the time you cross the Jordan into the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must set up large stones and cover them with plaster. Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you.”
Humans are often forgetful. We tend to take our blessings for granted and focus on the negative, which can allow apathy to take root. The Israelites were no exception. God knew they needed a constant physical reminder of his covenant at the center of their lives, so he told them to construct large stones and write the law on them.
We can also get complacent. We ease into our routines; we take God for granted. One thing we can do is construct our own “stones”. We can place physical reminders of God’s goodness in our homes, cars, and offices. Do you get angry at other drivers? Place a scripture card on the dash reminding you to keep calm and love them. Put up prayer reminders at home or work. These examples help us write God’s word on our hearts and remind us of his faithfulness.
