Amos 7-8

Daily Devotional from Amos 7—

Verses 14-15
Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’”

Amos wasn’t a minister. He wasn’t anything particularly prestigious at all; he was a simple shepherd (Amos 1:1). Shepherds were typically pretty poor and they are pretty low in society, they do dirty work. But God seems to love the shepherds. First God makes David the shepherd boy King of all Israel, now He’s made Amos a prophet.

What are you doing today? Working in fast food? Working at a warehouse? Unemployed? Retired? You don’t need to be in the ministry to be a minister. Jesus has a calling for you and it might be something you never felt you were equipped to do - look at Amos! God is calling you today right where you’re at. Listen for him and respond with obedience, and watch what Jesus does! Stay plugged in, abide in the vine and watch how God uses you! You have purpose.
