Psalm 110

Daily Devotional from Psalm 110—

Verse 4
The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Melchizedek was the king of Salem, and a priest of God in the time of Abraham. After Abraham won a battle, Melchizedek provided bread and wine for Abraham and his soldiers, and blessed Abraham on behalf of God. The name ‘Melchizedek’ means ‘King of Righteousness’, and ‘Salem’ means ‘Peace’, so he was also the King of Peace.

In this psalm, David is speaking prophetically about Jesus. The offices of priest and king were typically not seen in the same person, except in Melchizedek, and in Jesus. And while both men were priests, neither was descended from Aaron (from whom all priests were supposed to come). Melchizedek was born ages before Aaron, and Jesus was from the tribe of Judah. So, Jesus wasn’t BORN a priest, the LORD appointed Him as a priest, and He is the only priest – and King – who continues alive today!

Give praise and honor to our Eternal Priest and King of Righteousness and Peace!
