John 13

John 13:5
He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

This is amazing. Jesus is literally minutes from being arrested and hauled off to a mock trial, and he’s washing his disciples’ feet. Now that’s dedication. He knew his disciples would forsake him. He knew one of them would even betray him. Yet there he is washing their feet. Back in that day this was the job of slaves. It was a way of communicating social inferiority. Then Jesus turns and says to us in verse 15, “I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done.”

Sometimes in life we strive to get the upper hand, but that’s impossible to do when you’re washing somebody’s feet. So, if the spirit of Christ lives in you, follow his example. Stay low, serve people, and entrust yourself to God’s care.
