Matthew 19

Daily Devotional from Matthew 19—

Verse 21
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Salvation is a freely given gift, but following Jesus requires that we die to our flesh. The Bible says, “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.” One thing we must die to is the love of money, which can be hard! We are constantly bombarded with ads promoting the latest gadgets. Scrolling social media shows people buying luxury items and eating at fancy restaurants. Those things alone are not evil, but they are a never-ending expedition that leaves us empty.

Our society teaches us to work hard and make money so that we can buy stuff. But Jesus asks us to take what we have and give it to those in need. And this doesn’t just apply to money or items—the Christian life is one of sacrifice. Daily we must be ready to sacrifice something for the sake of loving God and loving our neighbor.
