Proverb 13

Daily Devotional from Proverb 13—

Verse 18
Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honored.

When someone asks us to consider that our way of thinking or acting might not be as wise or as Christlike as it could be, we have a choice.

We can react: we might get defensive, explain our reasoning, stick to our guns, or just shut down.

Or we can respond: we might consider what they are saying, search scripture to see if it holds water, ask Jesus to shed light on our hearts, ask a trusted person what they think, and submit our will to the Holy Spirit. The other person might be right, or they might not be.

Our attitude is the point. A person with a teachable spirit, willing to listen and converse, will be honored. Not only by the one doing the nudging (which may feel like criticizing, but is often done in love), but by God, because God honors a humble, teachable spirit.
